Mills County Receives $2,525,000 in RISE Grant Funding
17 Apr 2020
Glenwood, Iowa, April 17, 2020 – The Mills County Economic Development Foundation (MCEDF) announces the recent Iowa Department of Transportation $2,525,000 grant award from the RISE Local Development Program. The RISE program was established to promote economic development in Iowa through the construction or improvement of transportation routes within public roadways. Iowa cities and counties are eligible for funding in the form of a grant, loan, or a combination thereof.
Mills County Economic Development Foundation Executive Director Rick Allely stated, “The application for these funds has been a strategic effort involving existing companies, landowners, IDOT, the Mills County Board of Supervisors, local utility providers, new industrial users, and various state agencies. These road improvements enhance public safety and support existing businesses while opening new sites for industrial growth. Our hope is to attract new investment and high-quality jobs to Southwest Iowa.”
Up to $2,525,000 from the county share of the RISE Fund was approved for a Local Development grant to assist in the paving of approximately 2,400 feet of Applewood Road, construction of approximately 4,100 feet of 182nd Street, passing/turn lanes on County Road H-10 and Bunge Avenue as well as overlay of approximately 11,700 feet of Bunge Avenue. The project is targeted for completion in 2021.
Mills County and Southwest Iowa have seen tremendous negative impacts from natural disaster in 2019 and the COVID-19 virus 2020. The ability to open an additional area consisting of several hundred acres for development is a big win for the region. This area remained dry in 2020 and a portion just received Foreign Trade Sub Zone status earlier this month.
Allely gave great appreciation to the IDOT Commission and staff noting everyone involved has one goal in mind and that is to bring positive change and opportunity to Iowa.
